    4. PonderiousDetective stories, murder mysteries are read for enjoyment at some level, often to try and forecast how the tale might evolve – discover the ending before the final pages. This is the first Elizabeth George work I have read and so her Linley-Havers combo are interesting to follow for a while but seem to be not in charge of the investigation as blown along by environment change imposed by winds of chance. So attention shifts to the other item of what might be this authors model for co [...]

    5. Having read several Ms. George novels, I decided to start reading them in order.Being an earlier work (#3), makes little difference in Ms. George’s intricate writing. Her very unlikely British police team of Thomas Lynley and Barbara Havers are worlds apart in lifestyle and society; yet they blend beautifully. In this novel we have a 13 year old boy at a boarding school brutally murdered. The novel unravels in all directions on its way to having the mystery solved. There are quite a number of s [...]

    6. First of all, let me state that I love Elizabeth George's Thomas Lynley series and consider them among my favorite works of fiction. I have largely read the series out of order and only just now finished this third installment in the series. The premise is very intriguing--murder of a young boy at a prestigious, elitist boarding school in rural England. There are undertones of classism, homophobia, and racism in the mystery that all contribute to an intricate whodunit. Why only 3 stars?Well, the [...]

    7. By now I know what to expect in an Elisabeth George novel: mystery with a good dose of romance. The mystery story is well done and kept me guessing until the end. My complaint is that one angst filled romance would be quite enough; two is overkill. I had a hard time believing that a well educated women would be ignorant of the science behind childbirth and make assumptions based on the "karma" associated with a previous decision. Add to that a separate unrequited love story and I felt these f [...]

    8. "I've come for your help," he said in a rush. "I pray you'll do something, Tommy. I'm in serious trouble," so John Corntel, who was at Eton with Inspector Lynley. Little Mattie Whately, a scholarship student at Bredgar Chambers has disappeared over a weekend when most students are away. Nobody has missed him since he was supposed to visit a friend and his sports team received a note from the nurse. Soon, things get more and more complicated - the teachers are conducting affairs, having family tr [...]
